Organized around a sequence of intimate courtyards and inspired by the timeless villas of the Italian Renaissance, this approximately 4,200-square-foot custom residence in Grand Islands at Seven Oaks reimagines the traditional courtyard home through a composition of interconnected indoor and outdoor living spaces. Rather than centering the experience on a grand foyer, the architecture unfolds through carefully choreographed outdoor rooms, covered loggias, and framed garden views, creating a residence where architecture and landscape exist as one cohesive experience.

Architecture Rooted in the Courtyard

Designed by Todd Sweaney, the residence evolved from the architectural foundation established through the earlier Patio de Andalucía collaboration with Bassenian Lagoni into an entirely new interpretation. The plan was reimagined to embrace the proportions, architectural detailing, and subtle Gothic influences of the Italian Renaissance while strengthening the relationship between formal entertaining spaces, family gathering areas, and a sequence of interconnected courtyards. The result is improved circulation, greater natural light, and a more cohesive indoor-outdoor living experience that reinforces the courtyard as the architectural heart of the home.

Arrival begins beneath a Gothic-inspired entry portal anchored by a hand-hewn stained wood door and framed by precast stone detailing that recreates the appearance of hand-carved Renaissance limestone. Decorative corbels, pediment-inspired window surrounds, custom wrought-iron ceiling inlays, and smooth plaster walls establish an architectural vocabulary rooted in classical Italian precedent while maintaining the warmth and livability expected of a contemporary custom residence.

Beyond the entry, a groin-vaulted interior colonnade becomes one of the home’s defining architectural experiences. Supported by Tuscan columns and illuminated by a rhythmic procession of hanging lanterns, the gallery connects the primary living spaces while maintaining continuous visual relationships with the surrounding courtyards, allowing natural light and landscape to become integral elements of the architecture.

A Sequence of Outdoor Rooms

Rather than relying on a single backyard, the residence is organized around a collection of distinct outdoor spaces, each serving a unique purpose. The arrival courtyard welcomes guests before they enter the home, while dedicated kitchen and primary suite courtyards introduce natural light, privacy, and quiet moments of retreat throughout the floor plan.

The primary suite opens to a secluded garden centered around a tranquil fountain, transforming the grand master bath into a private sanctuary inspired by the intimate courts of historic Italian villas and reinforcing the seamless relationship between architecture and nature.

Indoor–Outdoor Living

Expansive covered patios extend the home’s living spaces toward a 40-foot lap pool accented by elegant copper spillway fountains and architecturally integrated water features. A fully equipped outdoor kitchen beneath the rear loggia encourages year-round entertaining while preserving the disciplined proportions and understated elegance established throughout the residence.

The result is an outdoor environment experienced not as a backyard, but as another series of thoughtfully composed architectural rooms where recreation, relaxation, and everyday living unfold naturally.
