Italian Renaissance–Inspired Estate | Bakersfield

Inspired by the timeless villas and grand country estates of Italy, this private resort estate occupies 2.5 acres in Bakersfield and encompasses approximately 24,000 square feet under roof. The estate includes a 12,000-square-foot main residence, a 4,000-square-foot guest and entertainment house, nearly 3,000 square feet of covered colonnades and outdoor living spaces, an eight-car garage, and a collection of resort-inspired amenities—all thoughtfully composed as one unified residential estate.

Main Residence

Originally conceived as a 10,000-square-foot residence by Scholz Design, the home evolved during the design and pre-construction phase through close collaboration between the homeowners, Scholz Design, and Todd Sweaney, Principal and Master Builder. Before construction began, the residence expanded to approximately 12,000 square feet with the addition of a 2,000-square-foot attached mother-in-law suite, a dedicated theater and concession lounge, and a complete redesign of the primary suite and bath.

Arrival begins through a formal motor court and fountain courtyard before leading into interiors defined by groin-vaulted archways, a sculptural floating marble staircase framed in handcrafted wrought iron, a dramatic crystal chandelier, custom cabinetry, natural stone, and richly detailed millwork. Monumental in scale yet welcoming in character, the home reflects a timeless balance between classical architecture and modern family living.

Guest & Entertainment Estate

As construction of the main residence progressed, new opportunities emerged to further enhance the family’s vision. Todd Sweaney personally designed the approximately 4,000-square-foot guest and entertainment house together with nearly 3,000 square feet of connecting colonnades, outdoor kitchen, and architectural gathering spaces. Rather than functioning as independent structures, these additions transformed the property into a cohesive private resort estate.

The guest house features a full-service bar, exercise room, and approximately 120-square-foot steam sauna. Expansive Pella® lift-and-slide pocket doors disappear into the walls, opening directly to the resort-style pool, spa, and dramatic grotto to create a seamless indoor-outdoor living experience.

Resort Living

Designed for both multigenerational family living and exceptional entertaining, the estate also features an elevator, dumbwaiter, expansive covered patios, a regulation-size illuminated basketball and tennis sport court, and thoughtfully connected gathering spaces that balance remarkable scale with everyday comfort.

A Master Builder Collaboration

The finest private estates are rarely the result of a single vision—they evolve through thoughtful collaboration. This residence reflects the combined vision of the homeowners, Scholz Design, and Todd Sweaney, whose architectural leadership before and during construction helped transform an exceptional custom home into one of Bakersfield’s most distinguished private resort estates.

The result is a timeless family legacy where architecture, craftsmanship, and construction come together under disciplined Master Builder leadership—an enduring expression of The Return of the Master Builder.
