Organized around a dramatic two-story courtyard, Patio de Andalucía reinterprets the timeless courtyard homes of Andalusia through authentic materials, disciplined architectural proportions, and thoughtfully composed indoor-outdoor living. Originally conceived as the first residence in Sweaney Custom Homes’ luxury portfolio collection and its model home, the project established the architectural direction for the company’s early portfolio while demonstrating how a close collaboration between award-winning architects Bassenian Lagoni and Todd Sweaney could transform traditional Mediterranean architecture into a home designed for modern California living. Bassenian Lagoni developed the architectural design in collaboration with Todd Sweaney, whose architectural vision, design direction, working drawings, and construction leadership helped shape the residence into a cohesive and authentic expression of Andalusian architecture.

An Architecture of Arrival

Rather than entering directly into the home, visitors first experience a carefully choreographed sequence of outdoor and indoor spaces—a defining characteristic of traditional Andalusian courtyard residences. Passing through handcrafted entry doors, the architecture unfolds around a dramatic central courtyard where smooth hand-rounded plaster walls, sculptured brick, artisan wrought iron, stained timber balconies, and a graceful sculptural staircase establish the home’s unmistakable character.

More than an outdoor gathering space, the courtyard serves as the architectural heart of the residence, connecting the main home, the private two-story casita, and the surrounding living spaces through a composition of light, proportion, and timeless craftsmanship.

Authentic Craftsmanship

Throughout the residence, traditional materials are interpreted with exceptional attention to detail. White flush-grouted sculptured brick, precast architectural accents, stained wood beams and corbels, smooth plaster with hand-rounded corners, and carefully proportioned openings create an authenticity rarely achieved in contemporary Mediterranean architecture.

One of the home’s defining architectural details began with Todd Sweaney’s recommendation that Coronado Stone pair its sculptured brick profile with a white color previously available only within another product line. The result proved so successful that Coronado Stone ultimately adopted the combination as a standard product offering. Throughout the residence, the brick is further elevated through carefully detailed soldier-course surrounds with pointed brick accents above doors and windows, reinforcing the craftsmanship and architectural character found throughout the home.

A Sequence of Spaces

The transition from courtyard to interior is marked by an elegant groin-vaulted colonnade, where classical columns frame a procession of spaces leading toward the grand dining room. Rather than serving as a hallway, the colonnade becomes an architectural experience in itself, carefully choreographing movement while maintaining visual connections back to the courtyard.

Inside, soaring ceilings, an oversized precast fireplace, handcrafted stained cabinetry with carved corbels, granite countertops, decorative range hood, and abundant natural light create interiors that feel both refined and welcoming. Every room reflects the same disciplined approach to proportion, material selection, and architectural authenticity.

Living Beyond the Walls

Like the great courtyard homes that inspired it, Patio de Andalucía extends naturally into a collection of intimate outdoor rooms rather than relying on a single backyard. The central courtyard is complemented by a private primary suite garden centered around a handcrafted fountain, creating a secluded retreat that strengthens the relationship between architecture and landscape.

Beyond, a 40-foot lap pool, raised brick planters with precast caps, architectural fountain spillways, mature olive trees, and a fully integrated outdoor kitchen continue the Andalusian narrative. Every terrace, garden, and gathering space feels intentionally connected to the architecture, creating a residence where indoor and outdoor living exist as one continuous experience.

Design Through Collaboration

Originally created as Sweaney Custom Homes’ first luxury portfolio residence and model home, Patio de Andalucía became far more than a showcase for fine craftsmanship. It demonstrated how thoughtful collaboration between architect and Master Builder can elevate an already exceptional architectural concept through disciplined detailing, innovative material selection, and a shared commitment to timeless design.

Today, Patio de Andalucía remains one of Bakersfield’s finest interpretations of an authentic Andalusian courtyard residence. More importantly, it reflects a design philosophy that continues to guide Sweaney Custom Homes today: architecture is at its best when every material, space, and construction detail contributes to a single, unified vision.
