Designed, architecturally planned, and built as the personal residence of Todd and Dana Sweaney, Cortile Toscano reflects a lifelong appreciation for authentic Italian architecture, artisan craftsmanship, and thoughtful family living. Located within Grand Islands at Seven Oaks in Bakersfield, the approximately 6,200-square-foot residence was conceived as a timeless Italian country villa where architecture, landscape, and everyday life exist as one harmonious composition. More than a custom home, it became the place where many of the architectural principles and construction standards that continue to define Sweaney Custom Homes were first explored, refined, and lived.

Architecture Rooted in Tradition

Inspired by the enduring character of historic Italian villas rather than decorative interpretations of Tuscan design, the home was composed with timeless proportions, authentic materials, and meticulous craftsmanship. Mortared and boosted clay roof tiles recreate the irregular texture of centuries-old roofs, while hand-rounded plaster corners, natural stone, artisan wrought iron, hand-hewn shutters and doors, exposed timber beams, and precast moldings inspired by hand-carved limestone establish an authenticity rarely found in contemporary residential architecture.

Arrival begins through custom wrought iron gates into a private courtyard centered around a stone fireplace and classical fountain. Above, a Romeo and Juliet balcony reinforces the timeless dialogue between architecture and outdoor living that defines the Italian villa tradition.

Crafted for Living

Throughout the residence, craftsmanship serves everyday living rather than ornament alone. Groin-vaulted ceilings are highlighted by Todd Sweaney’s custom-designed waterjet-cut plate steel compass inlays, while a hand-painted mural within the domed rotunda ceiling and hand-painted architectural detailing celebrate the artistry of traditional European craftsmanship.

Travertine flooring, handcrafted cabinetry, hammered copper sinks, curved architectural walls, hand-carved moldings, exposed timber beams, cork ceilings, and Fleur-de-lis metal inlays establish a rich but restrained material palette. A dedicated theater incorporates professional acoustic and aesthetic treatments, while the adjoining game room overlooks the golf course from a private balcony. Even the laundry, exercise room, and attached casita were designed with the same architectural discipline as the home’s principal living spaces.

Like the great Italian villas that inspired it, Cortile Toscano extends naturally into the landscape.
